Republicans have been in a “war” against public education for many decades; invariably against funding to support America’s most vital institution(s).
Techniques are to oppose state and Federal initiatives to decrease taxes spent to support public schooling in states under their control; encourage charter schools owned by wealthy, private Republican donors; supporting anti-education individuals to “run” the State and Federal systems (DeVoss?); allow absurd tuition increases; closing schools in desperately needed areas; cutting educators’ salaries; lacking raises, pensions, maintenance, supply, extracurricular activities, new books and supportive materials; and, much more.
They profess their “support” of education; even falsely claiming to be the “party of education.”
This includes K-12, H.S. and College/University levels.
Schoolbooks, such as those produced primarily by the Texas Republican State Board of Education, deny mention of significant historical people, events and proven science (all genres). They excluded: Thomas Jefferson (10 years); George Wallace; school segregation; FDR’s minimum wage legislation; the New Deal, just a few. The Civil War may not be given more than a page with no mention of slavery.
Jacqueline Jones, chairwoman of the University of Texas' History Department for history books for ten years, said, "the minimum wage remains one of the New Deal's most controversial legacies,” and, "We do our students a disservice when we scrub history clean of unpleasant truths, and when we present an inaccurate view of the past that promotes a simple-minded, ideologically driven point of view.” Republicans promote an extreme, ideologically driven point of view.
The Board went overboard in the book, in its premise and idolatry over Ronald Reagan, giving him more coverage than any other; Billy Graham is revered. Moses influenced the writing of the Constitution.
Hillary Clinton, Sandra Day O’Connor, Andrew Carnegie, Thurgood Marshall and Helen Keller, among others, are eliminated from the books this year. Jihad was described as Muslims attempting to be better people.
Evolution was eliminated; only creationism should be taught.
These are but a small example of what the extremists on the right believe and propose for all Americans, black, white or any color in-between — no more freedom of religion or choice. Believe as fundamentalists believe or else your rights, and those of your children to have an excellent, well-rounded education, will be taken away by the political censors of the New Republican-Trump Party.
In Arizona, the reincarnation of Sen. Joseph McCarthy is Nazi Fascist. Mark Finchem. No need to go over reasons, because everything he has ever proposed is utter nonsense to anyone who can think with an open mind. Those that can’t probably don’t read the paper, or anything, anyway. Their knowledge comes from Fox-TV, the only station they watch. Even Fox is beginning to learn what Trump is about and has several celebrities who have given up on the vindictive Grifter-in-Chief.
Education is the enemy of Republican politics. In every Republican-run state, and Federally, the efforts to uncut education has been prevalent for decades. Why?
Enlightened people learn to research, reason, analyze, rationalize, use their powers of mind, study, charity, Faith, hope, positivity; they learn kindness, humility, equality and humanity. They learn to compromise, speak, communication, tell the truth and confidence.
Education is vital for stability, knowing right from wrong, development of wealth (not daddy’s money), character, independence and most of all, self-preservation.
Republicans want to keep people under their control in their 35 percent base. If people are educated and cultivated, they will learn to think and then understand the Republican motivation and drive to reduce the number of educated citizens.
