FYI: Those gun proponents on the right have inundated social media with FALSE claims from many respected leaders since George Washington. They are the usual LIES told by the extremists of the right, ala Wayne LaPierre.
For example, the Douglas students speaking out against guns are NOT PAID ACTORS or paid Liberal antagonists. They ARE STUDENTS.
Now, George Washington DID NOT say,”A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include our own government.” OUT OF CONTEXT.
HE DID SAY, “Among the many interesting objects, which will engage your attention, that of providing for the common defence(sic) will merit particular regard. To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.
A free people ought not only to be armed but disciplined; to which end a Uniform and well digested plan is requisite: And their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories, as tend to render them independent on others, for essential, particularly for military supplies.
The proper establishment of the Troops which may be deemed indispensible (sic), will be entitled to mature consideration. In the arrangements which may be made respecting it, it will be of importance to conciliate the comfortable support of the Officers and Soldiers with a due regard to economy.” HE WAS PROMOTING A TRAINED MILITARY, NOT vigilantes. Virtually every Founding Father was in agreement with Washington.
Ronald Reagan(R) did say, "I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen for sporting, for hunting and so forth or home defense. But I do believe an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon nor needed for home defense.”
Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter sent a letter to Congress asking them to abolish the manufacture of assault weapons for public use.
George H. W. Bush(R) did resign from the NRA, saying “…your broadside against Federal agents deeply offends my own sense of decency and honor; and it off ends my concept of service to country. It indirectly slanders a wide array of government law enforcement officials, who are out there, day and night, laying their lives on the line for all of us.
You have not repudiated Mr. LaPierre’s unwarranted attack. Therefore, I resign as a Life Member of N.R.A., said resignation to be effective upon your receipt of this letter. Please remove my name from your membership list.
